Swung by the haunt today on my way for a bike ride to check on the drying of a few masks. Some success and failure.
First here’s an update on my Freddy mask:
Next step will be for shellac to give it a glossy moist look. Overall it’s coming along nicely.
Now for the somewhat failure which I’ve learned from, my Jason hockey mask. I took a plain white cheap mask and applied a grey primer, then a little “stone” texture colors for variety. After that dried I took sand paper to it for texture and wear.
Next was the 3 red triangles which I sketched with sharpie to mark where to lay tape. I managed this with junk paper and medical tape.
Painted about 3 or 4 layers:
And let it dry. Came back to check on it today and remove tape. The paint dried very well but…the smooth surface of the mask didn’t let the paint grip well. In hindsight I should of sanded the mask before any paint because the tape also removed all layers of paint.
Sooo…perhaps it’s just best to take it down to the base level and make the surface grittier. Once I get the actual paint job done I’ll also be looking to replace the cheap elastic band with leather straps pop riveted where the buttons currently are. Otherwise all these mask projects are super easy.
